So I was thinking about something just now. How nice is it when someone offers you a piece of gum? I think that’s so nice. Not the times when it’s because your breath is gross, but when they’re having some gum and they want to let you know that you can have some, too. It’s almost romantic to offer someone a piece of gum, you know what I mean? “I’m about to enjoy this, would you like to enjoy this as well?” Lovely. Damn. That’s some pretty heavy stuff for 2 PM on a Wednesday. It’s like a Goddamn think tank over here at this Coffee Bean.

What about how much of a dick move it is when someone doesn’t offer you some gum, when they are just about to enjoy a piece themselves. They’re basically telling you that they care more about a stick of gum than they do your companionship. It is like they are not inviting you to their party. That isn’t very romantic.

darren mccarty retired today. 15 years is a good run for anybody in the nhl. he has had some problems, but i will guarantee one thing: he will never pay for a beer in my town ever again, simply for this one moment. claude “the turtle” lemieux taking the punishment he deserved. the very essence of the prevelant hockey mentality of ‘get his number for next time’ belief. we as a city waited, we waited for this moment for 301 days after the brutal hit from behind on our beloved kris draper. darren mccarty delivered. he got his number, and he definately got him next time. lemieux did not deserve a square up, he did not deserve a fair fight. he deserved to get his ass kicked. he got what he deserved. he was always a dirty player, and it finally caught up to him on that night, march 26, 1997. i still have it on vhs tape, because there was something in the air that night that made a 13 year old me tape the game. so the next time i raise a glass, i will raise it to you #25 and i’ll sip it with a smile, and remember when i watched darren mccarty go to battle for the city that gave him something to battle for.

i’m tired of people hating on the state of michigan, specifically detroit.

look you guys. it’s not like we’re not aware that we’re in a serious downward spiral. we live it. every day. we see it as we drive from our homes every morning, across I-94 and I-75 and I-696 and I-96. we see the buildings decaying, whole blocks of streets abandoned and graffiti on the overpasses. we see the commercial buildings with “for sale” signs on them and the empty parking lots.

we hear it too. on the radio. on the news. read it on the internet. hell, time magazine is so damn fascinated that they’ve purchased a house here and are writing a years’ worth of stories about our decline and the accompanying decay.

we’re the butt of jokes. the punchlines for late night comics and satirical writers. a national joke last year, thanks to the misguided actions of our mayor. our auto companies are struggling to survive and our unemployment rate is so high we should qualify for an emergency stimulus package on our own.

i’m just tired of seeing headlines like “dubai is the new detroit” and all the other pieces that seem to do nothing more than remind people that (in someone else’s opinion) detroit - and michigan as a whole - sucks.

it gets old. the horse is dead. stop beating it. we’re very well aware of our surroundings. it’s not like we’re living in a bubble and are oblivious to the problems. it’s mainly that we’re so far down we don’t know where or how to begin to climb back up.

so please. stop bashing us. this state has so much to offer. so many people who are anxious and willing to put in a hard day’s work. to lend a hand to others who may need. to show you that while the rest of you think we’re down, we’re definitely not out.

they always say it’s always darkest before the dawn. well, dawn should be coming anytime now.
